What is a Non-Surgical Facial Transformation?

By Roberta L Gartside, MD, FACS

Can I Really Look Years Younger Without Surgery?

No one ever truly needs cosmetic surgery. But sometimes facial cosmetic surgery may be the answer to achieving your goals and desires. Especially when you look at yourself in the mirror daily and what you see really bothers you.

The question then becomes, how does one know how to make a difference in ones appearance? First, consult a plastic surgeon. Plastic Surgeons can inform you on both surgical and non-surgical options. Second, not everything you may want improved requires plastic surgery. Often after reviewing your surgical and non-surgical options, such as fillers (Juvederm, Restylane, Perlane, Radiesse, etc.) and Botulinumtoxin A ( Botox and Dysport), if you are not yet ready to have a surgical procedure, Non surgical options can temporarily create the change you are looking for until one is ready for surgery.

What is used to create a non-surgical change?

BOTOX Cosmetic or its alternative Dysport are both forms of Botulinumtoxin A. This medicine is injected into particular muscles of the face to temporarily prevent them from contracting and producing what is referred to as “lines of expression”. In other words, if people tell you that you look like you are always frowning, then this would be the recommended treatment. Because the effects are temporary, plan every 3-4 months returning to see you doctor.

If your lines and wrinkles are not from expression, then we need to determine if they are from age and gravity or sun damage (photoaging). The use of cosmetic fillers (Juvederm, Restylane, Sculptra) can plump up these areas of loss, and can be used to correct some of the effects of gravity. Various skin care products, such as Retin A, or non invasive procedures, like peels and microdermabrasion help reduce the effects of sun damage (fine lines and brown spots). Think of it this way : Think of a beautiful sleek vintage sports car…Cosmetic fillers are used to fill in any dents and Retin A/peels/microdermabrasion are used to revitalize or smooth out the paint to restore the vibrant shine.
Most of what I have discussed falls in the realm of maintenance and prevention. Taking care of ourselves and our skin is important to keeping the most youthful skin appearance possible. Whether one has enhancements or not, it’s a decision that you make when you feel it is necessary to turn back the hands of time.
